This website indicates that the one room school house in Crofton was used from 1905 to 1948 which cannot be true. I attended school here along with my brother and three two sisters in 1954.
Being that I was born in March of 1947 I would have been 7 at that time - therefore by my reckoning the school was still operational in 1954. I used to live just up the road from the beach where there were (in the mind of a 7 year old) huge slag piles. Our neighbors (and landlord) were the Postgates (I believe). I recall very fondly the long walk to and from school.
I started school in Nanaimo the year before, then we moved to Lake Cowichan where I started grade 3 through to grade 6 before moving to Kamloops in 1958.
If we hadn't moved to Lake Cowichan, I would have called Crofton the best place in the world (other than the Straza's who terrorized this little boy on his way to school). My summertime barefoot day's on the beach playing in the tidal waters and watching 'old Tom', the whale the played among the log booms, were simply magical. Thank goodness there wasn't any TV at the time.
I have dreamed about my brief time in Crofton ever since.
